Wine in Japan

It may seem odd to start a book whose focus is drinking and Japan with a chapter on wine. Most people do not associate that beverage with Japan. Sake, or nihonshu, on the other hand, is the drink that immediately comes to mind in that context. But it is clear that the earliest inhabitants of the land that eventually came to be known as Japan were not imbibing sake. Rice is essential in the production of that drink and rice cultivation, it is believed, did not enter Japan until the Yayoi period (circa 300 BCE-250 CE). In the preceding period, the Jomon (circa 14,000-300 BCE), the inhabitants were most likely quaffing wine, albeit sans screwcaps and sulfite warnings, but wine nevertheless.

Researchers have found many elderberry seeds in the ruins of Sannai Maruyama (三内丸山遺跡), Aomori Prefecture, as well as those of wild mulberry, silvervine, and wild grape. Seiichiro Tsuji  (2005) argues that such seeds were mixed according to some recipe, boiled, and allowed to ferment. The yeasts involved in the process were wild, as opposed to commercial, and most likely yielded wine of inconsistent quality.

There’s nothing like a little skin to help the public get the skinny on what you have to offer, and that’s exactly what Torii did with the so-called “nude” poster used to pitch his product. The services of one Emiko Matsushima, a well-known opera singer, were secured. Emiko was first photographed clad in kimono. Then, for the second segment of the photoshoot, the garment fell from her body, like a Vitis labrusca grape shedding its skin, exposing her underwear to the inquisitive lens. During the third segment, gasp, that last bulwark against indecency met its demise, and the “topless” poster was born. This was hardly the full monty, though, as you can see, but it was enough to pique the interest of the Japanese public and elicit the usual “tisk, tisk” from the people who usually go “tisk, tisk.”
